Getting Out for Those Who Get Out for Jesus

By Carrie Arnold
It was a chilly but mild New Year’s Day in 2017 when my then 11-year-old daughter Elizabeth and I started hiking. I knew God was whispering something to our hearts as we set off into the woods. We chased the light in silence, tuning out the distractions of this world, and listened for the voice of the Holy Spirit. Little did we know that this day would mark the beginning of a creative new way to raise funds for BGMC and Speed the Light.

Our hikes increased in distance and difficulty in and through the spring season. May quickly became missions month for the children in the Not Too Young (N2Y) kids’ church at Faith Chapel in O’Fallon, Mo. Our staff tells every child that they are “not too young” for the divine plan and Kingdom authority purpose God has for their lives.

The N2Y students are devoted to BGMC, freely giving just as Christ freely gives to them. I encouraged the students for the month of May to get out for those who get out for Jesus. We talked and prayed about ways to get out of their comfort zones when raising money for BGMC.
One of the creative ways suggested was to pass around a pair of hiking boots in place of their usual Buddy Barrels. Each family involved took their hiking boots outside the church to family, friends, and neighbors to help raise additional funds for missionaries.

Around this time, Elizabeth and I were clocking miles in our new hiking boots to see how many miles we could hike for our BGMC project. Others in our church family were doing the same. We organized local hikes to help others connect with God in the outdoors, away from distractions. We prayed with children and adults under the canopy of green trees and flowing streams.

Our month of missions culminated on Saturday, June 3. Elizabeth and I had set a goal to hike the tallest peak in Missouri, Taum Sauk Mountain, in honor of the missions giving by our students. Some of our church friends and family greeted us at the top, halfway through our hike. The gathered group then hiked to the top of Mina Sauk Falls before Elizabeth and I hiked back down the mountain. We hit some rain on the way down as we chased the light, but we finished strong. We had hiked 28 miles in 12.5 hours, and it was all for missions, Jesus, and His great love for all people.

The following Sunday, we were able to reveal the work of the N2Y students and their families. In six short weeks, the children had raised over $1,000 for BGMC by hiking the trails, and Elizabeth had raised over $200 for Speed the Light.

We had surpassed our church BGMC giving from last year in just six short weeks!

As a leader, I’m so thankful for this opportunity for the N2Y children and their families to spend time outside listening for God’s voice. The reward of their willingness to get out of their comfort zones for the cause of Christ is amazing. As a mother, I’m proud of my daughter, who worked hard to show others that she is “not too young” to step into a big goal for God’s big purpose. As a daughter of Christ, I am thankful for the opportunity to encourage and lift others up as they seek God for the divine plan and Kingdom authority purpose for their own lives.
