Teen Makes 75 Pound Buddy Cake for Auction
by Julia Quinn, children's pastor, First Assembly of God in
Bartlesville, Oklahoma
Every other month on a Sunday evening after church, we do
some type of dinner to raise money for BGMC. This past March, we chose to have a "spuds"
dinner because of St. Patrick's Day. We had about 150 people in attendance
that evening.
My BGMC coordinator, Jan Willaford, thought it would be neat to have a "Buddy" cake to auction off during the spud dinner. She had been teaching Lauren Burks, one of the teens in our church, how to make cakes. Lauren was so excited to make the cake and did a great job. It was made up of three different flavors.
The cake sold for $1,100! We raised about $1,600 total for BGMC that evening.
Lauren's mother, Tammy, says, "Lauren has a passion for children, missions, and baking. Lauren decided to use her talent for that evening to make individual cupcakes as well as the giant Buddy Barrel cake, which weighed in close to 75 pounds!"
